Trimming is not just aesthetics. Done correctly, it extends the life of a tree, reduces storm damage risk, and keeps limbs clear of structures, power lines, and neighboring property.
Done incorrectly — wrong timing, wrong cuts, too much canopy removed at once — it stresses the tree in ways that take years to recover from.

Types of Trimming
Reduces overall canopy size by removing ends of major branches back to lateral growth points. Used when a tree has outgrown its space or is growing toward a structure.
Removes selected interior branches to improve light penetration and air movement. Reduces wind resistance and storm damage risk without altering the tree’s overall shape or height.
Removes lower limbs to increase clearance beneath the canopy — for structures, mowing access, or pedestrian and vehicle clearance along driveways and walkways.
Targets dead, dying, or diseased branches. Dead branches are heavier per unit length than live branches and are the first to fail in storms — removing them directly reduces risk.
Specific cuts to address branches growing toward power lines, rooflines, HVAC units, fences, or neighboring structures. Usually the most time-sensitive type of trimming work.
Selective canopy work to open or improve a view from a specific vantage point while preserving the tree’s health and structure. Common in hillside properties and lakefront lots.
Oklahoma Species & Seasonal Timing
Trim during dormancy. Oak wilt — a fungal disease — spreads through fresh pruning wounds during the active growing season. Spring and summer trimming on oaks is a real disease risk in Oklahoma.
Structurally weak at crotch junctions — trimming to reduce competing leaders when young reduces catastrophic splitting risk later. Can be trimmed year-round but benefits from dormant season work.
Trim during dormancy. Prone to pecan scab and fungal issues. Dormant pruning minimizes exposure to disease entry points created by fresh cuts.
Year-round trimming possible but heavy pruning in summer stresses the tree. Major reduction best in late winter before leaf-out when the tree’s resources are still stored.
Prune late winter before new growth. Avoid topping — cutting crepe myrtles back to stubs causes permanent structural damage and produces weak fast-growing regrowth.
Drought-tolerant and common across Greater Tulsa Area’s Cross Timbers transition zone. Prune for clearance and form in late winter. Avoid heavy pruning during extreme heat.
Oak wilt in Oklahoma: Fresh oak pruning wounds during spring and summer are a documented entry point for the oak wilt fungus. If you have oaks that need trimming, we schedule that work for November through February. If an oak is damaged in a storm during the growing season and requires emergency cuts, we take precautions — but scheduled trimming should always wait for dormancy.

Crown reduction on two co-dominant branches — taken back to lateral growth points — would provide 4 to 5 feet of clearance without removing more than 15% of the total canopy.

Trimming costs in the Tulsa area generally range from $500 and up for large multi-tree sessions or complex crown reduction on a mature specimen.
A 30-foot tree and a 70-foot tree are fundamentally different situations for crew time and equipment

FAQ
Most established shade trees benefit from inspection every 3 to 5 years, with deadwood removal as needed. Trees near structures or utility lines may need more frequent attention — clearance can close faster than most homeowners expect.
Topping means cutting a tree back to large stubs, removing most of the canopy. We don’t recommend it. It causes permanent structural damage and typically results in weak, fast-growing epicormic shoots that are more breakage-prone than the original canopy — the opposite of what most homeowners are trying to accomplish.
Proper trimming — cuts made at the correct location and angle — does not damage a healthy tree. Poor trimming does: flush cuts that remove the branch collar, stubs left too long, and excessive canopy removal in a single session are the common damage patterns.
The terms are often used interchangeably. Pruning specifically refers to cuts made for the health and structure of the tree. Trimming sometimes refers more broadly to shaping and clearance work. We use both terms to mean the same general category of canopy work.
